An earthquake capable of causing severe damage in populated areas hit an isolated offshore area of the Southern Alps region in New Zealand yesterday, causing some property damage.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciencies said the quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and occurred at 9.02 a.m. (2002 GMT yesterday) and was centred offshore 27 miles north of the West Coast township of Haast.
