A New York firefighter who survived the suicide attacks on the World Trade Centre in September marched shoulder-to-shoulder with British veterans yesterday as Britain honoured its war dead.

After two minutes of silence as clocks struck the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month - marking the anniversary of the end of the first World War - thousands of veterans filed past the Cenotaph memorial in central London.

New York fireman Mr Joe Callan joined the parade in honour of the hundreds of his colleagues who were killed on September 11th. The US ambassador to London, Mr William Farrish, took part in the ceremony. Also marching for the first time were veterans of the US 82nd Airborne regiment.
