A new State waste policy aimed at supporting economic as well as environmental objectives is to be ready by the end of the year, Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan said yesterday.

Mr Hogan said the new policy would end “a period of stagnation” in the waste management industry.

The review will also consider a levy on packaging and a complete overhaul of arrangements for the collection and treatment of domestic waste.

In relation to the plastic bag levy Mr Hogan said he had launched a consultation with the packaging industry.

He said while the industry-funded body Repak was doing a good job there were some concerns.
