Los Angeles - Savouring what he called a "sweet victory", the mayor-elect, Mr James Hahn, called yesterday on the city's diverse factions - whether or not they supported him - to pitch in and help build the second largest US city.

"I want to be a man for everyone," Mr Hahn said at his first press conference since defeating his rival, Mr Antonio Villaraigosa, on Tuesday by about 54 to 46 per cent in a divisive contest that many think turned on negative ads Mr Hahn ran against his opponent.
