Over 15,000 new private cars were licensed for road use in July of this year, an increase of nearly 6 per cent on 2006 figures.

Second-hand cars licensed in July also increased by 16.2 per cent (728) on the same month last year, figures released by the Central Statistics Office  today showed.

The CSO revealed the amount of new cars rose in July by 273 from June.

The figures show the total number of all new vehicles licensed during July was 21,863, up 9.4 per cent on 2006.

By make, Toyota sold the greatest number with 2,330 cars followed by Ford (2,086), Volkswagen (1,705) and Opel (1,535). Honda sold the greatest number of motorbikes with 75 followed by Suzuki with 67 and Yamaha 66.

Meanwhile, the number of new goods vehicles registered increased by 20.8 per cent to 4,252 over the same period.
