The Nasdaq is to continue to seek alliances with stock exchanges in Europe, said Mr John Jacobs, chief executive of Nasdaq Financial Products.

He said Nasdaq is "always talking to anyone" for possible partnerships but declined to name the parties it is in discussions with.

Nasdaq "never confirms anything" until an agreement is sealed, he said, declining to comment on persistent speculations about its planned merger with the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

A few months ago, there were reports the LSE and Nasdaq discussed a possible merger and asked US regulators for some concessions to allow the deal to go ahead. But talks broke down due to difficulties in the financial markets, according to reports that followed weeks later.
