British murder squad detectives are today searching a flat in north London close to where parts of two dismembered bodies were discovered in bin bags.

A blue tarpaulin covered the front and back of the premises with the entrances to the three-storey block of council flats cordoned off by police tape and guarded by four officers.

The search follows the discovery of remains by a tramp as he foraged for food in a wheelie bin in Camden, north London.

Scotland Yard believe the remains are of a woman and a young girl and forensic tests were continuing today in a bid to identify them.

Tests were also being carried out on another set of body parts discovered nearby to establish whether they belong to the same victims.

Today neighbours said a man who lived in the flat being searched on Royal College Street, Camden had not been seen for several days.

Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook said: "I am appealing for anyone who has any information or who saw anything suspicious in the last week to contact us."

The murder inquiry was launched on Monday after the tramp took the remains, two sections of legs, to a local hospital where staff called police.

The area was cordoned off and another bin bag containing the torso of a young girl was found.

A further search nearby yesterday uncovered seven bin bags containing more body parts which were today being analysed by forensic experts.

Police believe the victims, both white, were killed over Christmas or within the last seven days.
