Murder inquiry in Wexford

Gardaí have upgraded the investigation of the suspicious death of a man (84) in Wexford to a murder inquiry.

Gardaí have upgraded the investigation of the suspicious death of a man (84) in Wexford to a murder inquiry.

The man's body was discovered outside a house at Ballyedmond, just off the main Wexford-Gorey road, at about 4.50pm yesterday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the office of the State Pathologist was notified. The body remained at the scene last night and the area was sealed off for a forensic examination.

It has now been established that the deceased died as a result of asphyxiation.

A woman (50) was arrested at the scene and taken to Enniscorthy Garda station for questioning. She was taken to the psychiatric unit of Waterford Regional Hospital for assessment before being released back into Garda custody.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any person who was in the townland of Ballyedmond between the hours of 8am and 5pm  yesterday, Sunday August 19th, to contact the incident room at Enniscorthy on 053-9242580, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda station.
