Police in Belfast have begun a murder inquiry after a man died following a stabbing during an altercation at a bar last night.

A man is being questioned tonight by the PSNI.

The row occurred in the pub on May Street in the city centre around 11 p.m. last night before moving outside.

Robert McCartney (33), from the nationalist Short Strand area of east Belfast, died in hospital earlier today of stab wounds.

The married father of two was found unconscious in Cromac Street after a fight broke out in Magennis's Whiskey Cafe in nearby May Street.

Another man (31), who was also stabbed in the stomach, was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

PSNI officers carrying out searches of the area tonight have reportedly come under attack from nationalists.

Investigating detectives urged any members of the public who spotted trouble at the bar on May Street last night or in the surrounding city centre locations to contact the incident room at North Queen Street police station.
