The pensioner accused of murdering Irishman Kevin McGuirk and his wife in South Africa was yesterday told he would be free to spend Christmas with his friends.

Erwin Poppinger (75) was bailed until February pending further police inquiries into the killings in August near Johannesburg. Dublin-born Mr McGuirk (54) and his South African wife Kim (34) were shot dead on August 15th in their bedroom at the house they shared with Mr Poppinger, Ms McGuirk’s father. The retired engineer has admitted shooting both with his pistol after a row over household bills.
