Cricket:Middlesex have confirmed that they have been contacted by Warwickshire about the possibility of signing star batsman Eoin Morgan. The county are keen to sign the 23-year-old when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Morgan has been a revelation for England ever since he decided to switch allegiance from Ireland in May of last year.

The Dublin-born batsman starred in England’s ICC World Twenty20 win before going on to score a match-winning hundred against Australia in the first one-day international at the Rose Bowl last month.

Morgan has also broken into the England test squad and could feature in the forthcoming series against Pakistan.

Should Morgan leave Middlesex, it would bring to a close a seven-year spell for the left hander at Lord’s.

Warwickshire’s director of cricket Ashley Giles has watched Morgan’s development closely in his capacity as an England selector and he is now keen to bring the enterprising batsman to Edgbaston.

A Middlesex spokesman confirmed Warwickshire’s approach this afternoon. He said: “I can confirm that we have been contacted by Warwickshire about the possibility of signing Eoin Morgan.

“I have been in contact with (Middlesex director of cricket) Angus Fraser this morning and he is very keen that Eoin stays at the club. We have offered Eoin a new contract and we hope he will sign it.”

Should Morgan fail to sign a new contract with Middlesex, he will be free to talk to Warwickshire a month before his current deal expires at the end of the season.
