Athens - A Greek prosecutor said yesterday he had brought charges of endangering passengers against anyone at the shipping company who might be deemed responsible for last week's sinking of the Express Samina passenger ferry.

At least 79 people died when the ferry hit a well-charted islet and sank with more than 500 people aboard late on Tuesday just before reaching the Aegean island of Paros.

"Those responsible at the shipping company were charged with exposing passengers to danger, resulting in death," the public prosecutor, Mr Dimitris Dadinopoulos, said from the island of Syros, where the legal investigation is taking place.
