The search for the body of teenager Columba McVeigh, one of the "Disappeared", resumed at first light in Co Monaghan this morning.

Mechanical diggers and a Garda team are concentrating on two areas close to the village of Emyvale in a bid to discover the remains of Mr McVeigh, who was taken away and killed by the IRA in 1975.

The latest search, which is likely to take the rest of the week to complete, is the third attempt to find the body of the youth.

Previous efforts lasting a number of weeks in the same area in 1999 and a year later ended in failure.

Last week the Commission for the Location of Victims Remains was given new information from the IRA via an intermediary about the spot where the Mr McVeigh may have been buried.
