The girlfriend of a British man missing after an ambush in the Australian outback today took part in a police reconstruction of the couple's terrifying ordeal.

Miss Joanne Lees, (27), and 28-year-old Peter Falconio were held up by a mystery gunman as they travelled in their camper van on a desert highway 175 miles north of Alice Springs on Saturday night.

Miss Lees managed to escape after being tied up by the man and thrown into the back of a van. She spent several hours hiding from the gunman before raising the alarm.

However it is feared that Mr Falconio, of Hepworth, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was shot dead.

Police have launched a massive hunt for the gunman and have enlisted the help of Aboriginal trackers.

Miss Lees, of Almondbury, near Huddersfield, took part in the police reconstruction to help police build a fuller picture of what happened.

Journalists kept their distance from the scene of the attack as Miss Lees was joined by police officers to relive her ordeal.

Her mother Jennifer James, (54), said: "We are just hoping the re-enactment will jog Joanne's memory - or jog the memory of somebody else.

"She's bearing up as well as can be expected but is still very distressed. A friend has come up from Sydney to be with her and that's helping, but she's still very traumatised."

Mr Falconio's father Luciano has flown to Australia to help the search for his son.

He told a press conference in Alice Springs that he would not have made the journey if he had given up hope of finding his son.

"It is my feeling that he is still alive, otherwise I wouldn't be here," Mr Falconio said.
