The mother of a missing teenager today distanced herself from a clairvoyant-inspired Garda search for her body near the family home in Co Wexford.

Mary Sinnott said she had not been told by gardai of the new operation apparently directed by a Dublin-based psychic.

Her daughter Fiona, a 19-year-old mother-of-one, disappeared eight years ago and is presumed murdered.

New searches began yesterday in the remote Mulrankin area of Co Wexford after some relatives met a paranormal medium.

He claimed the teenager was bludgeoned to death and her blood-stained clothing could be found in a ditch near St David's Church in Mulrankin.

He said her remains may be buried close to a nearby septic tank and Gardai agreed to a new search after some relatives contacted them about the claims. "I never knew anything about this," said Mary.

"When I heard there was a psychic involved I said I'm having nothing to do with it, for I don't believe in psychics."

Mrs Sinnott said gardai have yet to notify her about the ongoing operation just two miles from her home in the small village of Bridgetown.

"No garda has contacted us about this search. They contacted us about the searches earlier this year, but not about this," she said. "I'll let them get on with it. I'm hoping Fiona will be found one day but I'm not going near that search.

"We are just waiting for word. I hope somebody will give me word. It's only down the road."

The widowed mother-of-five said she was wary of psychics following a previous intervention two years after her daughter's disappearance. "We had one here about six years ago. He was here for about six hours in our home. Both my brother-in-law Johnny and my late husband were here," she said.

"Then about two years later we found out that he was looking for money." She said she alerted Gardai after the clairvoyant asked for up to €5,000 for information leading to the discovery of Fiona's body.

Gardai today refused to deny or confirm the latest searches were based solely on the paranormal powers of a psychic. They also refused to comment on claims by Mrs Sinnott that she was not notified of the ongoing search.
