Buenos Aires - A federal judge ordered Argentine former president, Mr Carlos Menem, jailed while he is investigated as the alleged head of an "illicit association" which illegally sold arms in the 1990s to Ecuador and Croatia, a court spokesman said yesterday.

Mr Menem offered a written statement on Tuesday to Judge Jorge Urso who is investigating the arms sales from 1991-1995.
