Ireland's Paul McGinley won the Wales Open this afternoon after beating Scotland's Paul Lawrie and Englishman Darren Lee in a play-off after the rain-ravaged tournament had been reduced to 36 holes.

McGinley's par at the fifth extra hole of sudden-death earned him 201,000 Ryder Cup points to put him on the brink of his debut for Europe against the United States at The Belfry next month.

Rain washed out the first day on Thursday and prevented Sunday's play going ahead as planned.
