McDonnell stars again as Ulster lift title

Ulster 0-14 Connacht 0-9

Armagh's Steven McDonnell continued his rich vein of form with a eight point haul to lift Ulster to the interprovincial football title at Brewster Park this afternoon.

Ulster started brightly and raced into an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead. But Galway trio Padraig Joyce, Sean Og de Paor and Derek Savage rallied for Connacht and bridged the gap.

Ulster, who never trailed in the game, held a single point advantage at the break (0-6 to 0-5) and had goalkeeper Micky McVeigh to thank for that lead after he denied Roscommon's Francie Grehan with a superb save.

Both sides traded scores after the break but Ulster were soon shifting gears as Christy Toye, Enda Muldoon and McDonnell edged Brian McEniff's side into a lead that Connacht would not peg back.

McDonnell sealed the victory and a superb season with two late points to secure Ulster their eighth inter-provincial title in 13 years and a tremendous personal haul of eight points.
