Concert promoter MCD has applied for a licence to hold a series of concerts in Dublin’s Phoenix Park next July, in place of its seminal music festival Oxegen, which it has confirmed will not be taking place next year.

In a statement, the Office of Public Works confirmed earlier this week it had “agreed a series of events with MCD in the Phoenix Park during the month of July next year”.

Each concert will have a capacity of 45,000.

Manchester band The Stone Roses are confirmed to play on Thursday, July 5th. Tickets went on sale at 8am on Tuesday.

The likely reason for the cancellation of Oxegen, which has taken place at Punchestown racecourse in Co Kildare since 2004, is the recession and its impact on ticket sales.

Last year the festival, which has a capacity of 80,000, attracted 58,000 on Friday and 70,000 on the Saturday and Sunday.

It has been the favourite festival among the 18-to-30 age group since its inception in 2004.
