OUTGOING EU commissioner Charlie McCreevy said last night he does not feel responsible for what has happened to the Irish economy and wished the Government well in its efforts to turn the country’s fortunes around.
Mr McCreevy was minister for finance from June 1997 until September 2004. He was minister for social welfare between February 1992 and January 1993, and was also minister for tourism and trade in 1993 and 1994.
Asked in Brussels last night if he felt responsible for what had happened, Mr McCreevy said: “I don’t. I think, the Irish economy, I’m prepared to defend many things that we did over the number of years that I was in office together with other people in the Government.”
Mr McCreevy ruled out a return to domestic politics. “I’d like to do some other things, not politics.”
