Premier League round-up:Republic of Ireland youngster James McCarthy celebrated his first start in the Premier League by setting Wigan on the way to a 2-0 win against fellow struggles Wolves at Molineux.
McCarthy, signed last summer from Hamilton, followed up his debut goal against Hull in the FA Cup with the 59th-minute opener before Charles N’Zogbia added the second for the Latics.
Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann also saved a Hugo Rodallega penalty and both sides ended the game with 10 men as Wolves defender Richard Stearman and Wigan midfielder Hendry Thomas were sent off.
The visitors had looked the sharper side throughout with Rodallega causing problems for the shaky-looking Michael Mancienne and his fellow defenders. N’Zogbia was also a threat with his pace and trickery and only a fine display by Hahnemann kept the score within reasonable bounds.
The Latics will also take pleasure from a rare clean sheet after conceding 31 goals on their travels this season. But they were aided by a less than impressive home attack and it is no surprise, despite the efforts of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle, that they are the division’s lowest scorers with just 17 goals.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp endured a frustrating 500th game as a Premier League manager after heroics from Boaz Myhill earned Hull a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane.
Myhill pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Spurs, who equalled their club record of five consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League but will disappointed not to find a way past Hull’s goalkeeper.
Hull, meanwhile, have not won in seven games but will see the draw as a point gained after withstanding pressure and threatening to follow the example of Stoke and Wolves, who won at Spurs’ ground earlier in the season.
