FRANK McBREARTY jnr, who featured at the Morris tribunal, has announced that he is to run as a Labour Party candidate in the upcoming local elections.

Mr McBrearty revealed his intentions to run in the Stranorlar electoral area at the campaign launch of fellow Labour candidate Shay Carbin on Tuesday evening in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal town.

Mr McBrearty and his father were both central figures in the marathon Morris tribunal which investigated corruption by some gardaí in the county.

Mr McBrearty said: “I have not really been politically minded but when the Labour Party approached me a few weeks ago I gave it serious consideration and decided that perhaps I could make a difference.

“Fianna Fáil politics have been redundant in this country and Donegal has never benefited from the Celtic Tiger.

“The Labour Party represent the ordinary people of this county and that is what I stand for.

“In my battle with the State I received a valuable education and realised that you can take them on and, with determination, can achieve justice.

“To this day I still get numerous phone calls from people from all over the country asking for advice and help but I realised all I could offer was advice. To give help I need to be a democratically-elected member and be in a position to give these people a voice.

“I have the voice that is prepared to stand up and be counted. I am not frightened and will make sure the concerns and problems will be aired at the council chamber if elected.

“I am not here to talk about the past: I intend to address the future – that’s what concerns the vast majority of the voters in this county,” he said
