A married couple used a car abandoned during the big freeze of 2010 in an attempt to fake a car crash, a court has heard.

Anthony Burnett (33), Sean O’Casey Avenue, Dublin, reversed his own car into the front of a car that had been abandoned on an icy road.

Burnett and his wife Jennifer Slater (32), Summerhill, Dublin, both pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making a false report. The judge branded the couple “incredibly stupid” before he gave them each suspended 2½-year sentences

Judge Martin Nolan said this was a “botched and ill- conceived” attempt at insurance fraud.

He said he believed the pair were now trying to lead a good life and imposed the suspended sentences.
