A jury in the High Court yesterday awarded £35,000 damages to the director of personnel and general services in University College Cork for libel in an article in the Examiner newspaper on August 26th, 1995. Mr Donal Coughlan of Rochestown Rise, Co Cork, claimed the article meant he was incompetent and not fit to be trusted, and that he was in breach of the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994 and had engaged in a course of action designed to frustrate a Mr Larry O'Brien in investigating what Mr O'Brien believed to be a breach of his remuneration rights.

The Examiner newspaper group admitted liability.
