A man in his 20s was shot and wounded in Portadown last night as he arrived at his home in the loyalist Brownstown estate close to the town centre.

Shortly after 8 p.m. a man armed with a handgun stepped out of an alleyway close to where the victim, believed to be the brother of a prominent loyalist, was parking his car.

The gunman is reported to have run up to the car and fired at least five shots, hitting the occupant in the back and hand.

Although wounded, the victim chased the gunman for a short distance before collapsing on the roadway.

He was taken by ambulance to nearby Craigavon Area Hospital. A neighbour of the wounded man said it was thought that his injuries were not life threatening.

This attack comes less than a week after two young Portadown men, Mr Andrew Robb and Mr David McIlwane, were murdered near Tandragee, a few miles from Portadown.

Tensions between Portadown's loyalist paramilitary groups have been high following the murder of Mr Richard Jameson last month.

All three killings are thought to be linked to a simmering internal loyalist feud in the Portadown area.

Last night residents of the Brownstown estate said they thought the incident in Oakwood Place was directly connected to the tensions within loyalism.
