Dublin Fire Brigade officers this morning rescued a man from the River Liffey after he apparently fell in near O'Connell Bridge.

Two fire brigade units and an ambulance attended the scene shortly after 11 a.m. A huge crowd had gathered after it was reported a man had been seen in the river below.

However, the fire services and gardai responded swiftly to rescue the man.

Fire officers lowered a ladder over the wall at Burgh Quay and assisted the man in his climb to safety.

He was put into the waiting ambulance where he appeared distressed, but unhurt.

A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said the man had been taken to St James's Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
