A 31-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he appeared in court charged with the murder of his brother in Tralee, Co Kerry on New Year's Eve.

Ailbe Lonergan of Quill Street, Tralee was charged with the murder of Michael Lonergan (34) at a house party at Balloonagh Estate on December 31st.

Michael Lonergan of Balloonagh Estate died at Kerry General Hospital at around 10.30pm. He was stabbed at his home just before 7pm.

Judge James O'Connor heard that Ailbe Lonergan replied 'no comment' when the charge of murdering his brother was put to him after caution.

The judge remanded Mr Lonergan in custody at Cork Prison to appear again at Tralee District Court tomorrow.
