A Real IRA suspect was remanded in custody today after being charged with explosive offences.

Ciaran Cahill (35) of Glenville Drive, Blanchardstown, Dublin, was arrested during a house raid in the city at the weekend.

A Garda detective told the Special Criminal Court that the accused was charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the IRA.

He was also charged with the unlawful possession of explosives, namely five pipe bombs, at Ulster Street, Phibsboro, in Dublin's northside, on Sunday.

Detective Garda Ciaran Regan, of the Special Detective Unit, said that when charged today at Blackrock Garda station, the accused replied that he "was not a member of the IRA".

Dressed in a black hooded top and black trousers, the defendant stood up in the courtroom briefly to identify himself.

Michael O'Donovan, representing the state, said the Director of Public Prosecutions was directing that the accused be charged with both scheduled offences.

Presiding judge Elizabeth Dunne remanded Cahill in custody until Friday morning.
