A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of a woman near Inverin, Connemara, on Monday.

A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of a woman near Inverin, Connemara, on Monday.

Jakub Fidler, of Cartur Leathan, Inverin, Galway, was charged with assaulting Nicola Vonkova, causing her harm at Cartur Leathan, Indreabhán, on July 21st, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

The court heard Mr Fidler was arrested at Galway Garda station at midday and charged at 2.16pm.

He replied 'No' when the assault charge was put to him by the Det Sergeant Tom Molloy, the court heard.

Judge Mary Fahy noted the assault charge before the court was a serious one and she granted the accused legal aid, appointing solicitor Olivia Traynor to represent him.

Judge Fahy remanded Fidler in custody to appear before Harristown District Court at 10.30am next Friday, July 25th, for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The body of 19-year-old Nicola Vonkova was found in a drain near a bungalow where she had been employed as a carer, in the early hours of Monday morning.
