An Asian man accused of shooting dead two students and wounding five at an Australian university appeared in court briefly today and was remanded in custody until February of next year.

Mr Xiang Huan Yun (36) was charged earlier in the day with two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder in relation to yesterday's… shooting at Monash University.

No details about Mr Xiang were released during his appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in the Victorian state capital, although a Cantonese interpreter was provided for him.

Xiang was not required to enter a plea and made no application for bail when he appeared.

Magistrate Wendy Wilmoth told Mr Xiang through the interpreter that the case had been adjourned until February 25th, 2003.

Two men died and five were hurt when a man armed with several handguns walked into a sixth floor economics tutorial room at Melbourne's Monash University on Monday and opened fire.

Monash University released the names of the dead later on Tuesday. They were William Wu (26) and Steven Chan (26) - both honours students in the university's Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics.
