A 29-year-old Nigerian man has been remanded in custody by a Co Kilkenny court in connection with a circumcision than resulted in the death of a four-week-old baby boy in Waterford city last month.

Mr Osagie Igbinedion, who was arrested at a hostel in yesterday, appeared before a special sitting of Thomastown District Court in.

He was accused of intentionally or recklessly engaging in conduct, by performing a circumcision with a razor blade, which created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to 30-day-old Callis Osaghie.

The infant - who was born of Nigerian parents - died some hours after he had been circumcised.

Mr Igbinedion, who has no permanent address in Ireland will appear in court again next Tuesday.
