Police in Co Derry are continuing to question a 46-year-old man in relation to a murder and assault of two men in Derry early yesterday morning.

One man in his 40s died and a 39-year-old man was left in a critical condition in hospital after being assaulted by a man with a hammer at a property in the Bayview Terrace area of the city.

The dead man has been named as Paddy Harkin.

A police spokeswoman said they hope to move Mr Harkin’s body from the scene later today and carry out a post mortem tomorrow. A forensic examination of the scene is ongoing.

The injured man was initially treated in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he remains in a critical condition.
