A father of three was repeatedly clubbed with a baseball bat as he lay on the ground in the Stiles estate in Antrim, the High Court in Belfast heard yesterday.

Mr Denver James Smith (33), from Ballycraigy Drive, Antrim, died in the early hours of New Year's Day after he was attacked by a number of men, said a Crown lawyer.

Mr Jerome Archibald (23), from Ardnaglass Gardens, Antrim, who denies murdering Mr Smith, applied for bail. His lawyer described identification evidence as "totally mistaken".

Bail was refused by Lord Justice Nicholson.
