A man has been killed and two others injured in a Dublin shooting last night.

According to gardaí, the shooting happened in Tallaght shortly before midnight at Kilmartin Drive in Tallaght, Dublin 24.

Gardaí on patrol, responding to what sounded like gunshots, found the body of a man (20) in a car in the driveway of a house. The man, who had injuries to his upper body, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to gardaí, when the house was searched, two other men, both in their 20s, were found with what appeared to be gunshot wounds and were taken by ambulance to Tallaght hospital. The two are described as being in a serious condition.

The scene is preserved for technical examination, and gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 01-6666000.

Labour Party justice spokesman Pat Rabbitte said the shooting was "proof positive" the Government is "failing abysmally to get to grips with gun crime".

No number of hastily-convened press conferences by the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern can deflect from the fact that he, and this Government are coming up short when it comes to tackling gangland crime," Mr Rabbitte said.

"The law-abiding people in the area are quite rightly appalled by this latest death. They expect and are entitled to a better policing service. . . . Sadly, if previous cases are anything to go by, the perpetrator is unlikely to be brought to justice."

Tallaght Sinn Féin councillor Seán Crowe described the shooting as an “appalling attack, which has left the local community stunned".

The latest incident is the third fatal shooting this year. On January 7th, Michael “Roly” Cronin was shot dead in a car in Summerhill, Dublin, while another man in the vehicle, James Moloney, died in hospital two days later.

The gunman had been sitting in the rear seat of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Last week, three men were injured in separate feud-linked gun attacks on consecutive nights in Finglas in north Dublin.
