A man has been killed in an early morning car crash in Co Cavan.

A man has been killed in an early morning car crash in Co Cavan.

The 22-year-old driver died at the scene on the N3 at Virginia after his car left the road and hit a wall at about 2am.

The man was alone in the car and there were no other vehicles involved. His body was taken to Cavan General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

The man is the first person to die on Irish roads this year. Some 186 people were killed in 2011, the first year since records began in 1959 in which the total was below 200.

A total of 212 people were killed in 2010, down from 238 the previous year, 279 in 2008 and 338 in 2007.
