A man who raped a woman after inviting himself to her flat has been jailed for five years by the Central Criminal Court.

Paddy Power, of Marian Place, Tullamore, Co Offaly had smoked cannabis, drunk half a bottle of gin and also consumed a large amount of poitin and beer in a drinking spree that started the day before the attack.

The court heard he was extradited from England in July 1998 after spending time in prison in Wolverhampton.

Power pleaded guilty to raping the woman on September 4th, 1994.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said he took Power's guilty plea into account, and the fact that the case involved none of the aggravated circumstances that often accompanied rape cases.

He backdated the sentence to July 10th, 1998, the day Power went into custody after his extradition from Britain.
