A 21-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital today after being struck by a British army vehicle.

Police and troops came under heavy attack with stones and bottles while the scene in the New Lodge area of north Belfast was being examined by accident investigators in the early hours of this morning.

The accident happened on the Antrim Road close to Duncairn Gardens, said police.

The British army would not comment on the incident, saying it was now a police matter.

But a spokesman said the driver of the vehicle was "badly shaken".
