Gardaí have arrested a man (47) in connection with a hit-and-run incident in which a man (83) suffered serious injuries in west Cork this morning.

The man from the Glengarriff area was injured when the car he was driving collided with a van on the main Skibbereen to Ballydehob Road at 10.15am.

The man was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries, while his wife received medical treatment locally in Skibbereen.

The driver of the van failed to stay at the scene of the crash at Abbeystrewery, but gardaí later arrested a man (47) at Market Street in Skibbereen.

He has been brought to Bandon Garda station for questioning, while his van has been impounded by gardaí for forensic examination.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who travelled between Skibbereen and Ballydehob and witnessed the crash to contact them on 028-23088.
