The PSNI has arrested a 70-year-old man in connection with the shooting of young schoolboy Darragh Somers (5) near Enniskillen earlier this year.
Police say there are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
The boy sustained serious injuries when he was struck in the head by a bullet from a .22 rifle while playing at break time outside Mullinaskea primary school in Co Fermanagh on April 22nd.
There were great fears initially that he would not survive the shooting. After two months in hospital, however, he made what his doctors said was a remarkable recovery.
He underwent two difficult lengthy operations but apart from slight impairment to his left leg and left arm responded well to treatment. His family described his recovery as "miraculous". It is hoped that physiotherapy eventually will resolve these outstanding problems. Darragh is due back at his primary school next Thursday.
"Earlier this year, the people of Northern Ireland were shocked and horrified when five-year-old Darragh Somers sustained serious gunshot wounds while playing in his school playground. Despite suffering life-threatening injuries, I am pleased to say Darragh is well on the road to recovery," said PSNI investigating officer, chief inspector Nigel Kyle yesterday.
Detectives and the Somers family believed the shooting was accidental and that Darragh may have been struck by a stray bullet from a farmer working in nearby fields. Over 50 legally-held weapons were seized in the area as police tried to trace who was responsible.
