Gardaí in Cork have begun an investigation after a man walked into a Garda station and handed in a large sum of money which he said he had found at the side of the road.

Gardaí in Bandon have appealed to the public for assistance as they try to establish the origins of the money found by the man while walking near Timoleague in west Cork yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí technical experts will carry out a forensic examination for fingerprints and will be checking the serial numbers on the notes and contacting banks to try and trace the money.
