The Court of Criminal Appeal has set aside the life sentence handed down to a Laois man for the repeated rape and sexual assault of his daughter over a 10-year period and adjourned a new sentence hearing until a later date.

The man was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mr Justice Paul Carney in March 2006. The judge had ordered the life sentence to run consecutively to a 20-year term already imposed for sexually abusing three other girls.Yesterday the court determined that the judge fell in to error by considering he was constrained to impose a consecutive life sentence.
