A 25 year old man who attacked and raped a woman last year in Wexford has been jailed for four years by the Central Criminal Court.

Patrick Power told detectives he had drunk about 12 pints of Guinness and a glass of spirits before the incident in which the woman was also badly assaulted.

He expressed remorse and fully co operated with gardai, Det Garda Patrick Mulcahy told prosecutor, Mr Patrick Gageby SC.

Det Garda Mulcahy added that the victim was a strong woman and has resumed working. Counselling has been arranged for her.

Power, of St Aidan's Crescent, Wexford, pleaded guilty to committing the offence on November 18th, 1995.

Mr Justice Lavan suspended the final year of the sentence to take account of the time Power had already spent in custody.
