A man in his 40s is to appear at Dublin District Court at 10.30am tomorrow charged in relation to an armed robbery in Portmarnock on Friday.

The man had been detained in the Belmayne area on Friday night under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, and held at Coolock Garda Station.

Another man aged 19 was also arrested in connection with the robbery.

Shots were fired during the incident after a garda on a mountain bike confronted the pair making their escape shortly after 5.30pm. They had threatened staff before leaving with a sum of cash.

The men were then confronted by the garda on patrol in the area. A number of shots were fired before the men hijacked a car and fled the scene. The garda was uninjured.

During a follow-up search a short time later in the Belmayne area, gardaí recovered a car along with a quantity of cash and a handgun and arrested the man facing court tomorrow.
