The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has started an investigation into the death of a man in Dundalk garda station yesterday.

The man, who is from eastern Europe, was taken into custody in an intoxicated condition at about 7pm when gardai observed him in the vicinity of the Marshes shopping centre.

He became unwell while in the garda station and the emergency services were called.

He was taken by ambulance to Louth county hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis conducted a post-mortem today.

The dead man will not be named until his next-of-kin have been informed.
