A foreign national died in Limerick this morning after being poisoned by substances he had ingested in a suspected drug-smuggling attempt.
The 19-year-old man, who is understood to be from Estonia was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital after he complained of feeling sick on a flight from Lima, in Peru to Amsterdam.
The KLM plane made an emergency landing at Shannon yesterday afternoon to allow the man to be taken to hospital.
An x-ray examination showed a number of capsules containing what is believed to be cocaine inside the man. Some of these had burst during the flight. The man died shortly after 2 a.m.
