One man is dead while his brother was saved after a car entered the sea off Cobh Quay, Co Cork today.
The men, both in their twenties and from the area, were in the car when it entered the water at around 1.40pm.
The Naval Service, based at Haulbowline, across from the quay, saw the incident and launched a crew of divers.
Gardai, Ambulance, Fire Service and Cobh lifeboat were also alerted and involved in the rescue mission.
It is understood one of the brothers managed to free himself from the car and get to surface. He was taken to Cork University Hospital were he was in stable condition tonight.
The other brother got trapped and his body was recovered from the western end of the deep water quay just before 2.30pm.
Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. A post mortem examination is to be carried out later.
The area would have been packed with tourists at the time, visiting the nearby heritage centre, and Gardai have appealed for witnesses.
