London - A British soldier who confessed to murdering a schoolgirl 25 years ago was freed from jail yesterday after the High Court quashed his conviction.

Andrew Evans was 17 when he was convicted in 1973 of murdering the schoolgirl, Judith Roberts, who was dragged from her bicycle near her home in Staffordshire. Evans, described as a vulnerable fantasist, was arrested after telling police he kept dreaming about the girl and was worried he might have killed her. The only evidence against him in his original trial consisted of confessions.
