A man being held on charges of smuggling sheep into Ireland has again been remanded in custody today.

Mr John Walsh, a livestock dealer originally from Co Offaly but now living in Carlisle in Britain, was remanded in custody at the Dublin District Court until the 18th of May.

He faces four charges of sheep smuggling and 10 charges relating to tax returns. The Dublin District Court heard in April that Mr Walsh owed £700,000 in unpaid taxes.

Bail had been refused at a previous hearing after investigating officer Det Insp John McDermott argued there was a chance Mr Walsh would abscond.

The defendant is expected to make a bail application next Monday.
