A man (24) has appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Ballina charged with the rape of a teenage girl in the grounds of a Co Mayo church last Friday.

The court heard the man was arrested in Limerick on Saturday.

Det Sgt James Carroll gave evidence of arresting the accused and charging him with the rape of the woman (19) in the carpark of the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

When charged, the man replied: "I don't know."

Judge Mary Devins refused bail after an objection was raised by gardaí, and the man was remanded in custody to appear at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.
