Man charged with murder of wife and publican

A man (46) was charged with two counts of murder at a special sitting of Dungarvan District Court last night.

A man (46) was charged with two counts of murder at a special sitting of Dungarvan District Court last night.

Mr Declan Power, of Kinsalebeg, Ardmore, Co Waterford, was charged with murdering his wife, and mother of three, Joan (40) on Saturday.

Mr Power was also charged with the murder of Maurice Curran (48) of Decies Bar, Main Street, Clashmore, Co Waterford, on the same date. Mr Power was remanded in custody and will appear in court again in Dungarvan on Wednesday.

The bodies of Mrs Power and Mr Curran were discovered early yesterday morning. The woman's body was found at her home in Ardmore, and Mr Curran in the street outside the pub he ran five miles away in Clashmore.

Mr Power was arrested some hours later near Ardmore and police later extended the period they could hold him for questioning.
